On saunas: frequently asked questions
Saunas are an investment in your lifestyle and wellness, so we’d be surprised if you didn’t have some questions. You’re not alone.
Traditional saunas use heated rocks to create a dry heat that radiates and warms the air, providing an authentic and rejuvenating sauna experience with real health benefits. The high temperature of the air allows the heat to penetrate through the skin and into the muscles. This diffusion of heat deep into the tissue is what provides the relaxation, detoxification, and recovery for which sauna bathing is renowned.
Infrared saunas use – you guessed it – infrared light to heat the body directly without heating the air as much. Many infrared saunas, particularly the type found in your average commercial gyms and spas, only heat the surface of the skin. While providing warmth, these units often don’t reach temperatures high enough to achieve the deep therapeutic benefits that traditional saunas offer.
For optimal sauna health benefits like improved blood flow, detoxification, pain relief, muscle recovery and relaxation, a traditional Finnish sauna is really unmatched.
Sauna bathing offers a range of benefits both for the body and the mind. The deep, penetrating heat promotes detoxification by inducing a deep sweat to flush out toxins and impurities. It also increases blood circulation, relaxes muscles, relieves stress, burns calories, and may even reduce risk of cardiovascular disease when used regularly. Many find the intense heat and steam extremely therapeutic and rejuvenating.
While saunas are a luxury experience, we want to make this revitalising practice accessible to a wider range of people. For those with spatial or financial constraints, we recommend the Auroom Cala Mini sauna cabin.
Our sauna recommendation: the Cala Mini innovatively concentrates the experience of a traditional Finnish sauna into a compact, one-person footprint. At just 950mm wide and depp yet with a generous 2050mm ceiling, it enables you to reap the benefits of heat therapy in even the tightest or cosiest spaces. Crafted with cedarwood and including its own electric heater, it delivers the same deep, purifying heat that a larger sauna would offer, but at remarkable value.
Not sure if a sauna is within your budget but still want the benefits of steam therapy? Our sister brand Geyser Steam offers luxurious yet space-efficient steam showers that can be customised to suit your needs.
We want everyone to experience wellness in their homes, no matter your spatial or financial parameters. Get in touch with our team, we would love to explore options perfectly suited to your lifestyle.
The size of the sauna heater you need depends on the volume of the room and how well insulated it is. As a general rule, you’ll need roughly 1kw of heating power for every 4-5 cubic metres of properly-insulated space. For example, a sauna that is 2000mm x 2000mm x 2200mm (and is well insulated) would require a 6-8kw heater.
To make sure you’re getting the right size sauna heater for your sauna, get in touch and let us know the dimensions of the space you’re working with, and we can recommend the ideal heater size.
For maximum health benefits, we recommend sauna bathers complete a cycle of 15-20 minutes in the sauna, cool off for 5-10 minutes, then re-enter for another 15-20min heat session. Exceeding 30 minutes per session is not typically recommended. Listen to your body, stay hydrated, and enjoy!
The optimal sauna temperature range is 70°C to 93°C. At these intense dry heat levels, your body experiences therapeutic stimulation through sweating, increased heart rate and deep heat penetration. That said, it’s important that you find what’s most comfortable for you – some prefer it even hotter while others enjoy a more moderate traditional Finnish sauna session around the 70-80°C range. No matter your preference, our sauna heaters and their intuitive controls allow you to precisely dial in the perfect temperature for your needs.
Generally speaking, saunas will reach optimal temperatures within 30-60 minutes. However, larger saunas may take a little longer to heat fully. We recommend turning on your heater about an hour before your desired sauna time. With our Uku Wifi and Uku Glass controls, you can even start heating your sauna remotely and have it ready for you when you get home from work or the gym.
We back all of our sauna products with robust warranties for your peace of mind. The Auroom sauna cabins come with a 5-year warranty and our HUUM heaters and controls have a 2 year warranty.
We can absolutely facilitate custom sauna designs. While our range of modular sauna cabin kits gives you fantastic quality and value, we also offer full custom sauna design and construction services. Our specialists can work with your requirements to craft the sauna of your dreams with custom bench layouts, doors, windows, lighting – you name it!
